Finger Paint Recipe

Make these finger paints for your kids, using the recipe below. Then let your kids enjoy painting with their fingers on a large piece of paper. Encourage your kids to smear the paint, mix colors to see what the results are and even make hand or footprints.

You'll Need
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped soap chips
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 6 cups water
  • large sauce pan
  • colored chalks (crushed)
  • glass jars

Directions:

In a large sauce pan, combine the soap chips, cornstarch, and water.

Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat (under adult supervision), stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Stirring constantly will prevent the mixture from sticking to (and eventually burning) the bottom of the pot. If this does start to happen, turn down the heat and stir even more.

Pour into individual containers.

Place one color of crushed chalk in each container and mix while it is still warm.

Let cool, then store in the glass jars (or other container with a lid). Clean baby food jars work well for this.

Your kids can use these paint like any other fingerpaint. Be sure to protect their work area with plenty of old newspapers and make them wear an old shirt or craft apron.
