You’ll Need

* Paper plates
* Green paint or marker
* Red construction paper
* Glue
* Dried Watermelon seeds (black)

Directions:

1. Cut a paper plate in half.

2. Pain the rim green. This will be the rind of the melon.

3. Cut a half circle the size of the inner part of the paper plate out of the red construction paper and glue it on your paper plate half.

4. Form the foil into a coil or spring shape (by wrapping it around a broom handle).

5. Dab some glue on the watermelon seeds and glue them on the red construction paper.

These make cute classroom and bulletin board decorations.

Sidewalk Paint

August 21, 2008

Did you know you can make your own sidewalk paint. Make a few batches in different colors, hand your kids some old paint brushes and let them get creative with their sidewalk paint.

You’ll Need

* 1/4 cup of corn starch
* 1/2 cup water
* Food Coloring

Directions:

Combine the corn starch and water. Stir until you have worked any lumps out and have a nice smooth consistency. I like to do this in cleaned yogurt or sour cream containers. Add food coloring and mix well. It’s ready to be used for painting.

Note: Sidewalk Paint easily washes off with water.

Sidewalk Chalk

August 21, 2008

You and your kids can easily make your own side walk chalk with these instructions.

You’ll Need

* 1 Cup Plaster of Paris
* 1 Cup Water
* Powdered Tempera Paint
* Toilet paper Rolls

Directions:

Mix the Plaster of Paris with the water. Add the powdered tempera paint in the color of your choice. You can also divide the plaster mixture into several containers and color each one with a different color paint.

Let it sit for a few minutes. Stand up the toilet paper rolls and pour your plaster into them. These will be your molds for the chalk. Set them aside and let the mixture dry for at least 24 hrs. Once the mixture is dry, remove the cardboard roll. If the chalk still seems moist, let it dry for another 24 hrs.

Use like any sidewalk chalk.
